NO GOLD STAR FOR YOU, MOM!
When a mother loses the dearest thing to her heart, her own child, in war this sacrifice is recognized by awarding her a "gold star". This tradition has been running for at least the last 65 years. So it is disturbing reading this story today:
veryone agrees that Ligaya Lagman is a Gold Star mother, part of the long line of mournful women whose sons or daughters gave their lives for their country. Her 27-year-old son, Army Staff Sgt. Anthony Lagman, was killed last year in Afghanistan, but American Gold Star Mothers Inc., has rejected Lagman, a Filipino, for membership because — though a permanent resident and a taxpayer — she is not a U.S. citizen. There's nothing we can do because that's what our organization says: You have to be an American citizen," national President Ann Herd said Thursday. "We can't go changing the rules every time the wind blows."Rules, smules. This is ridiculous. Our military especially the Marines must go all over the planet seeking people willing to die. The offer is the dead soldier and his family will become Americans so many families from across the southern border have jumped at this chance.
That explanation isn't satisfying the war veterans who sponsored Lagman's application, some other members of the mothers' group or several members of Congress.
"It is disheartening that any mother of a soldier, sailor, airman or Marine who has died in the line of duty would be denied membership in an organization that honors the memory of fallen service men and women," said Rep. Nita Lowey (news, bio, voting record), whose district includes Lagman's home in Yonkers.
Rep. Eliot Engel (news, bio, voting record), who represents an adjoining district, said the group should change its rules immediately.
"Whatever the excuse, American Gold Star Mothers' decision smacks of xenophobia and is in stark contrast to what Mrs. Lagman's son fought and died for," Engel said.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said, "We now have many noncitizens serving honorably in our armed services, and I hope that this can be satisfactorily resolved."
In Texas, right after the funeral of his son killed in battle, one father was arrested and deported. After many yells and calls for mercy, he was allowed back home with his family in America. This phobic brutality still exists even as "red" voters refusse the call to duty and pro war supporters, like during Nam, hide at home and refuse to fight, they still have to insult those who make the maximum sacrifice!
I am speechless about this, heh, actually, loud in condemning this behavior, this is ridiculous. This month more Americans died in battle, make that more Americans and foreign soldiers fighting for us than at any time in this misbegotten war. Today, a helicopter was shot down even as we wage a street by street battle within Bagdad now. This dynamo of destruction rages onwards unattended by attention from the media or the vast bulk of Americans.
Memorial day. Whom do we salute?
