BUSH PROVOKES THE FURIES
The ancient Greeks understood that leaders should be very wary about provoking the Furies. Sure fire way was to announce you are going to severely punish or stop anyone who is doing exactly what you are doing. A famous example was Oedipus who slew his father then announced he would poke out the eyes of any man who slew his father and slept with his own mother.
We all know what happened next, don't we?
From ABC News:
President George W Bush, whose administration has been hit by accusations of prisoner abuse, said that the United States was committed to the elimination of torture worldwide. Can we arrest him now? I am very anxious to hand over this idiot to the Hague to stand trial for his many crimes. This stupid frat rat of the Skull and Bones who loved to chant to the Devil that is the Hangman and the Devil that is Death...and apply appropriate punishment to him and his coterie of demon besotted neocons. Rummy, too, of course.
In a statement to mark United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, Mr Bush said: "Freedom from torture is an inalienable human right, and we are committed to building a world where human rights are respected and protected by the rule of law."
Accusations of prisoner abuse in Iraq, Afghanistan and at the US detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have brought into question the policies of the Bush administration in treating foreign prisoners.
The US has also been accused of sending some prisoners to countries with poor human rights records where they might be tortured.
An Italian judge last week ordered the arrest of 13 people linked to the CIA for kidnapping an Egyptian terrorism suspect in Milan and flying him to Egypt, where he said he was tortured.
Attorney-General Alberto Gonzales in March said the US would never send terrorism suspects to countries where they would be tortured.
He acknowledged that once the prisoners were in the other country's custody, the US had little control over their treatment.
"America will not pretend that jailed dissidents prefer their chains, or that women welcome humiliation and servitude, or that any human being aspires to live at the mercy of bullies," Mr Bush said in the statement.
"All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know: The United States will not ignore your oppression or excuse your oppressors.
"When you stand for your liberty, we will stand with you."
Lightning bolts should flatten the White House today if there were real gods with real guts. Alas, the gods sleep and they force us, the American people, to do something. Aside from throwing up or screaming, we have few options aside from storming the White House and forcibly removing him. The heavily armed guards protect him but only temporarily. Once public opinion turns entirely away from this unsavory, multiarrested, juvenile delinquent "leader" even his guards might step aside or even escort him out and deposit him elsewhere, in exile, I assume.
If the Furies don't rip him to shreds, first. They are very potent. Even gods feared these ancient hags.
