When the Soviet Union went bankrupt thanks to the monopoly on power and finances of one party that crushed all opposition and was thoroughly corrupted, the USA celebrated a new found monopoly on imperial power. The first thing we did, even as the Soviet state disintigrated, was fight for oil in the Middle East in 1990.

Literally pumped up by that victory as the oil sheiks of OPEC allowed the price of oil to drop to the cellar so long as we were their mercenary military in the Middle East, we decided to rule the world single handedly. Despite all the bones on the roadside of previous world girdling empires, we marched onwards.

When the elite handed our nation to Bush, the very first thing he did was rip up all our previous treaties that constrained our use of weapons, WMD, nukes, space militarization, all were embraced as the neo cons celebrated the coming American Century. Just last year, Bush told the UN that we reserve the right to attack any nation who might at any future date no matter how distant be our rivals, this astonishing declaration that even Hitler would have blanched in using, went unnoticed here at home except for some fringe blogs and web sites like, for example, or, two old anti war sites.

Putin hates Bush and is rearming.
Russian Air Force have successfully conducted a test of the X-555 cruise missile — the newest smart weapon utilizing the most modern technologies, the Interfax news agency reported on Thursday quoting deputy head of the weapons directorate of the Russian Military Forces Lieutenant-General Aleksander Rakhmanov.

“Our high-precision aircraft-based missile has been recently demonstrated. From a distance of 2 thousand kilometers the missile hit the target as they say in the air force ”right in the window,“ the general said.

Rakhmanov added that all modern high-precision weapons technologies had been used to create the new missile. ”This is a modernization of an old missile with use of all newest technologies,“ the general said.
Once again, Russia is working on what they are most excellent at: building missiles. Remember who still goes to the floundering Space Station?

Russian rockets. They beat us in many ways in the space race, first satillite, first animal in space, first human in space (Glenn was number two). First woman in space. First to land a probe on a planet, Venus. They didn't make it to the moon and immediately gave that up to concentrate on nuclear missiles which is why we had the SALT treaties and such.

This isn't someone we want to restart an arms race with for this time, they are thinking cheap. It is much cheaper to be aggressive than defensive, for example. Defensive means building castles and causways in the old days. Arming and stocking them, too. And defending the defences! A fancy wooden town becomes a flaming mess with only a little effort, for example. Attacking cities from the air like with nukes is much easier than stopping attacks! This is why we have diplomacy and et al. The UN was designed for this, too, only we wanted to use it as our imperial blungeon which is why Bush wants Bolton, the biggest blustering cowardly blunderbuss on earth, in the UN.

This wonderful analysis in, the Israeli paper for the intelligencia, says it all:
Under the cloak of secrecy imparted by use of military code names, the American administration has been taking a big - and dangerous - step that will lead to the transformation of the nuclear bomb into a legitimate weapon for waging war.

Ever since the terror attack of September 11, 2001, the Bush administration has gradually done away with all the nuclear brakes that characterized American policy during the Cold War. No longer are nuclear bombs considered "the weapon of last resort." No longer is the nuclear bomb the ultimate means of deterrence against nuclear powers, which the United States would never be the first to employ.

In the era of a single, ruthless superpower, whose leadership intends to shape the world according to its own forceful world view, nuclear weapons have become a attractive instrument for waging wars, even against enemies that do not possess nuclear arms.

Remember the code name "CONPLAN 8022." Last week, the Washington Post reported that this unintelligible nickname masks a military program whose implementation could drag the world into nuclear war.
Indeed. We know very little about the Chinese nuclear program. Readers of this blog can guess, though, that the Chinese have taken care of their end of the possible nuclear war because they have cleared up all their problems with Russia and are now in a fairly close and getting much chummier relationship. It is one of history's ironies that communist Russia and China hated each other with a violent passion. Now, thanks to capitalism, they are as close as they have ever been in the last 5,000 years.

I recommend reading the entire Haaretz article. The writer dares to imagine what a nuclear war would entail. Depleted Uranium is horrible enough. Using outright nukes will be very bad on too many levels, the worst being the USA's tendency to rely on annihilation tactics. We could annihilate Iraq in a minute, for example. As the people there resist our occupation, the temptation to nuke them rises as the cowardice of war supporters dry up troops available for street fighting.

Speaking of the devil, Reuters had a story few papers picked up:
he death toll for American troops in Iraq rose in May to the highest level since January, with the U.S. military saying on Tuesday insurgents have doubled their number of daily attacks since April.
This latest spree of violence by insurgents, who rose up after the American-led invasion in 2003 toppled President Saddam Hussein, put a dramatic end to a period when attacks on U.S. forces had waned after the historic Jan. 30 elections.
At least 77 U.S. troops were killed in May, according to a count of deaths announced by the military. That is the highest toll since 107 Americans were killed in January. It marked the second straight monthly increase since 36 U.S. troops died in March, among the lowest tolls of the war.
Even as we boasted of attacking Bagdad, a city we supposedly hold, planes and helicopters are raining out of the sky and our troops are being blown up steadily not ot mention the kidnappings and assassinations and did you hear of Afghanistan?

Just like I predicted in the article about poor Karzai's visit, he is a doomed man. At the funeral of a pro American cleric, the police chief of Kahandar was blown up along with others. Karzai is a marked man because all the warlords will be gunning for him because of the American War on Drugs, another war we will never win.

Not even with nukes.
