UN Votes Overwhelmingly to End American Boycott of Cuba
By Elaine Meinel Supkis
To keep a small group of voters in Florida happy, Bush once again leaves the US way out on a limb. To protect a mouse-sized asset, we throw away a mountain of good will.
From Swiss Info:
Nearly every country in the U.N. General Assembly told the United States on Tuesday to lift its four-decade old economic embargo against Cuba in a record vote of 182 to 4 with 1 abstention.Note the insanity here. We are presently violating Human Rights protocols as well as the Geneva Conventions running an illegal prison in Cuba! Torture and abuse ran rampant in our gulag there, this undercut all attempts at pretending we give a hoot about civil rights and human dignity.
The vote, held for the 14th consecutive year, was on a resolution calling for Washington to lift the U.S. trade, financial and travel embargo, particularly its provisions on penalising foreign firms.
Voting "no" were the United States, Israel, Palau and the Marshall Islands. Micronesia abstained and El Salvador, Iraq, Nicaragua and Morocco did not vote. Last year the vote was 179 to 4, with several countries not voting at all.
Cuba has been under a U.S. embargo since President Fidel Castro defeated a CIA-backed assault at the Bay of Pigs in 1961. Friends of the United States, including the European Union also voted yes because of the penalties against foreign firms but also criticised Cuba's human rights records.
Right now, many prisoners are on a hunger strike and we are forcing food on them. We still won't let the UN inspect our illegal hell hole and now we learn there are many such prisons even more hidden where literally thousands of people are being held without warrant or trial, torture is rampant and well, we are really making ourselves the laughing stock of the planet, whining about Castro being not nice to prisoners!
Meanwhile, McCain toils away, trying to force Bush to sign an anti-torture law.
