French Investigators Warned CIA About Niger Lies Year Before Powell's UN Performance

By Elaine Meinel Supkis

French spies warned CIA repeatedly for a year that the Niger yellow cake allegations were fake. Day by day, news leaks out about the lies Bush and his gang created to drive Americans into a totally illegal war. Meanwhile, Powell seems to have become the Invisible Black Man. Where is his "undisclosed place"?

From the Los Angeles Times:
PARIS — More than a year before President Bush declared in his State of the Union speech that Iraq had tried to buy nuclear weapons material in Africa, the French spy service began repeatedly warning the CIA in secret communications that there was no evidence to support the allegation.

The previously undisclosed exchanges between the U.S. and the French, described by the retired chief of the French counter-intelligence service and a former CIA official during interviews last week, came on separate occasions in 2001 and 2002.

The French conclusions were reached after extensive on-the-ground investigations in Niger and other former French colonies, where the uranium mines are controlled by French companies, the official said. He said the French investigated at the CIA's request.

The account of the former intelligence official, Alain Chouet, was "at odds with our understanding of the issue," a U.S. government official said. The U.S. official declined to elaborate and spoke only on condition that neither he nor his agency be named.

However, the essence of Chouet's account — that the French repeatedly investigated the Niger claim, found no evidence to support it and warned the CIA — was extensively corroborated by a former CIA official and a French government official.

The repeated warnings from France's Direction Generale de la Securite Exterieure, DGSE, did not prevent the Bush administration from making the case aggressively that Saddam Hussein was seeking nuclear weapons materials.
I remember Powell at the UN. His slide show was hilarious. HIs allegations were backed up with no data, his interpetation of the photos were a joke. The kicker was the vial of poison. Oh my. I wondered at the time if that was the left over anthrax from the Send Only To Liberals And Democrats Anthrax Attack right after 9/11 in order to scare Congress into passing the Patriot Act. It was amazing that Powell dared to flaunt this vial since the government called off the FBI when the anthrax trail led straight to a secret government lab here in America! Since that day, not one American official or politician utters the words, "Anthrax killer" any more than they say, "Bin Laden".

Ditto the news media.

Here is Powell concerning the WMD just before our war: From the Guardian:
The US secretary of state, Colin Powell said yesterday that UN weapons inspections in Iraq "will not work" and there was little point in prolonging them.

In an outspoken interview with five US newspapers, Mr Powell expressed a growing impatience in Washington for the confrontation with Iraq to be brought to a head, and his remarks were all the more significant in light of Mr Powell's role to date as the chief dove in the Bush administration, who helped persuade Mr Bush to take the case against Saddam Hussein to the UN.

"Inspections will not work, Mr Powell said. "It's the scepticism that we had all along ... How much longer should inspections go on? One month, two months, three months? What will be the difference if they are simply trying to get time in order to frustrate the purpose of the inspections?"

And in a speech yesterday, President Bush referred to Iraq's formal declaration last month accounting for its banned weapons programmes as "12,000 pages of deceit and deception".
Powell aides admit he knew he was lying at the time and was pretty angry about having to lie but like a good Nazi, lied anyway, with as much fake passion as possible. From the Downing Street Memo Site:

A former top aide to Colin Powell says his involvement in the former secretary of state's presentation to the United Nations on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction was "the lowest point" in his life.

"I wish I had not been involved in it," says Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, a longtime Powell adviser who served as his chief of staff from 2002 through 2005. "I look back on it, and I still say it was the lowest point in my life."
At least one man in this vast conspiracy to create a war feels guilty. And guilty, they are. Even as the media desperately tries to minimize the gravity of our collective crimes, the fact is, we are a rogue nation, this whole mess has utterly blackened our name. This is why there is all that harping about painting schools and giving candy to children. See? We are good to the kiddies. Just yesterday on my local TV, I chanced in to see what propaganda ABC was peddling. And guess what?

Look at the children of Iraq. We give them toys and candy and paint their schools and the ungrateful families kill us. Well, five soldiers were killed in Iraq yesterday and probably five more will be sniped or blown up today. And Powell is safe at home and so is his son who is the age where he could fight this war daddy launched at the UN but like Bush and Cheney and all the GOP, he is a chicken who wants to poop on our heads instead.

Send all the Bush/Cheney/Powell kids to war. Now.
